7th and 8th grade students from 30 different area schools are vying for the top spot in this year’s What’s So Cool About Manufacturing contest, and they need your help picking a winner.

“I think it helps to fulfill a lot of inquisitiveness and innovation in the students as they see what the manufacturers are doing and they either like it or they don’t,” said Rich Hobbs, CEO of the Manufacturer’s Resource Center.

The contest was created to inspire the next generation to join the manufacturing field.

Each school is paired with a different business. Students are then tasked with making a two-minute video about what they learn, which is voted on, in the search for a winner.

Some of the companies include Bosch, Ocean Spray, Martin Guitar, and Crayola.

“There’s a lot of innovation, a lot of process changes that are going on at the manufacturing companies,” Hobbs said.

Now in its 11th year, the program has spread to multiple regions in the state.

Voting for the Lehigh Valley Region begins Wednesday, March 13 and runs till Friday, the 15th, and is open to the public.

“We encourage everyone to vote,” Hobbs said. “The students, the parents, the manufacturers, anybody that’s involved.”

This year, the award ceremony will be held at Lehigh’s Stabler arena.

The show will air live right here on WFMZ, on Tuesday, March 26.
