CALAIS, Maine (WABI) – An electric company in Calais is getting a multi-million dollar loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
It’s part of a more than $6 billion effort to strengthen rural infrastructure in 44 states.
Eastern Maine Electric Cooperative will use the more than $14 million loan to connect 600 customers and build and improve more than 70 miles of line.
The loan includes almost $700,000 in smart grid technology.
The cooperative serves about 13,000 customers in Washington, Penobscot, and Aroostook counties.
