On January 18, 2024, Megan Craig, M.Sc. examined the thriving entrepreneurial atmosphere at UCLA, which embodies the flourishing startup community in Los Angeles with its dynamic and diverse environment. The Magnify Incubator at CNSI is an example of the variety of emerging businesses succeeding in the region. Active Membranes received the Water Technology Idol Award at the Global Water Summit 2023 in Berlin, Germany on May 9th. Arian Edalat, co-founder of Active Membranes, is on stage accepting the award. Active Membranes is one of the innovative companies located at the Magnify Incubator, focusing on revolutionizing the freshwater industry with membrane desalination. As freshwater becomes more rare globally, utilizing seawater and industrial wastewater as resources is costly. Active Membranes offers a solution to this issue with their patented technology, which includes electrically conducting nanofiltration and reverse osmosis spiral-wound membrane modules. This technology actively prevents scaling and fouling, reducing costs and environmental impact. Its flexibility applies to all types of water treatment systems that use membranes, ranging from small-scale household use to large commercial facilities. The innovation has the ability to target various markets and presents a market opportunity worth more than $20 billion. For a startup, the partnership with a university not only provides education but also serves as a platform for developing business ideas and fueling growth. At UCLA, we are nurturing and preparing students for success post-graduation, equipping them with the skills necessary to tackle societal issues and generate innovative solutions. It is thrilling to generate ideas that target distinct challenges.
