CALIFORNIA (FOX26) — A big announcement came down from the USDA regarding the sale of certain California produce in Vietnam.

On Tuesday the USDA announced that Vietnam has granted market access for California peaches and nectarines effective immediately.

This eliminates the phytosanitary barriers that have been keeping California peaches and nectarines out of the Vietnamese market.

Many in the USDA say they saw this as a huge when for California farmers.

“This is a fantastic example of USDA scientists providing the quality and objective research that was essential for Vietnam’s approval and for future U.S. industry exports,” said Dr. Chavonda Jacobs-Young, USDA Chief Scientist and Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics.

“This market access is a big win for California’s nectarine and peach producers,” said USDA’s Jenny Lester Moffitt, Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs.

The USDA said that getting to this solution took years of technical negotiations.
