USDA announces RFI on Climate Smart ag practices for biofuel feedstocks

USDA has announced a Request for Information as the agency considers Climate Smart ag practices for biofuel feedstocks.

Kurt Kovarik with Clean Fuels Alliance America says input will be gathered over the next 30 days to help shape guidance on the 45Z sustainable aviation fuel tax credit.

“Making sure the whole suite of practices are available to a farmer. As we know, under the original guidance they required that they be bundled. Basically meaning you had to do all of the practices to get any of the benefit.”

He tells Brownfield while the RFI will inform rulemaking on 45Z, the scope could be much broader.

“I think it’s kind of the first signal from USDA that they want to start gathering tangible information (and) credible verification on the suites of climate smart ag practices so they can begin to be utilized kind of across the spectrum of programs that may be suitable for.”

Kovarik says with 45Z set to go into effect January 1st, it is important guidance is finalized well in advance.
