Fourteen U.S. senators are standing up for the potato!
Led by senators Susan Collins of Maine and Michael Bennet of Colorado, the group sent a letter to the USDA and DHHS on Tuesday, urging them to not reclassify the potato as a grain in their dietary guidelines for Americans.
The group argues that the change would be “confusing to consumers” and potentially cause schools to lose “the most affordable vegetable” from their nutrition programs.
They add that the change ignores research that the potato is a vegetable, with “critical” nutrients such as potassium, calcium, and fiber, and should be treated as such.
