GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack visited Casco, Wisconsin on Thursday.

Joined by the Wisconsin Agriculture Secretary Randy Romanski, they held a roundtable with local farmers and community members.

During the event, Vilsack announced a new investment from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that will help lower costs increase competition and create new income opportunities for small and local farms.

“88 percent of farm families in America require off-farming help to be able to keep and maintain the farm. So, the question that I pose why is if that farm family must work multiple jobs? Why can’t the farm itself generate multiple sources of revenue?” said Vilsack.

Vilsack’s visit highlights how the Biden administration is trying to grow the U.S. economy from the bottom up.

Vilsack discussed the Biden administration’s investments in innovations and finding new markets for farmers. He discussed investments in farmers’ projects to create alternative fertilizers, including a project in the Fox Valley, after Russia’s attack on the Ukraine raised the cost of fertilizer globally.

He also talked about federal grants to convert farms to use renewable energy sources that would allow farmers to sell their excess energy.
