In an effort to expand access to clean energy and increase the availability of domestic biofuels, 55 Nebraska farms and businesses are set to receive grants totaling more than $10.2 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Grants range in amounts from $10,000 to $1 million. The grants will be used for a range of projects, including:

  • installing more energy-efficient electric irrigation motors
  • installing wind turbines
  • installing solar arrays
  • creating infrastructure to expand the sale and use of renewable fuels
  • upgrading geothermal systems

Two businesses are set to receive $1 million investments.

KAAPA Ethanol will use the grant to install an additional fermenter in Minden. The new system is expected to generate the business $3,300,000 per year and 31 million kilowatt hours of energy per year, which is enough energy to power 2,969 homes per year.

In addition, Sandhills Renewable Energy LLC will use the investment to install a more energy-efficient ICM system in Atkinson. The new system is expected to generate the business $18,000,000 per year and produce 230,000,000 kilowatt hours per year, which is enough energy to power 21,000 homes.

In total, USDA is providing nearly $180 million through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) and the Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program (HBIIP) to 586 projects in 42 states, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
