USDA Rural Development has a broad array of economic development programs designed to improve rural livability.

The undersecretary for USDA Rural Development, Basil Gooden, says they focus on everything from housing and infrastructure to healthcare and energy.

Gooden says the Rural Energy for America program has been especially effective in controlling energy costs.

“We have many examples of solar panels like on dairy farm tops where we are reducing energy costs,” Gooden said. “One thing we know about rural America is that they’re practical.

“And when you can reduce their energy costs or costs of any of their operations, they’re all in. And we’ve seen just a tremendous excitement about these energy programs.”

Gooden made those statements during the National Association of Farm Broadcasters Convention last month in Kansas City.
