MELBOURNE, Ark. (KAIT) – A Northeast Arkansas community will receive nearly $5.4 million to improve its wastewater treatment plant.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday that the Izard County town of Melbourne would receive $1,457,000 in federal loans and $3,933,000 in grants through its Water and Waste Disposal Loans and Grants program.

The town of 1,830 residents will use the money to replace the plant’s aging infrastructure, permitting the “safe and reliable transmission of wastewater” and “preventing pollution and runoff.”
