ALEXANDRIA
— U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development State Director Colleen Landkamer visited Runestone Electric Association in Alexandria on Thursday, March 14.
REA CEO Al Haman discussed how REA will use a $25 million rural electrification loan from the USDA to build line extensions to new accounts, make system improvements like replacing older powerlines, construction of a new substation, smart grid technologies, and installation of water heater controllers and demand response units.
The loan is for work projects in 2023–2026.
Malecha Enterprises owner Louise Malecha, West Central Research and Outreach Center researcher Pete Kennedy, Carlos Creek Winery owner Tyler Bredeson, and Pope/Douglas Solid Waste Management Director Steve Vrchota joined the meeting to share with Landkamer how their organizations will benefit from REA’s planned improvements.
“Whether we’re bottling wine, brewing beer, or hosting several hundred wedding guests, we need the power to stay on,” said Tyler Bredeson. Tyler and his wife, Michelle, own Carlos Creek Winery and 22 Northmen Brewing Company north of Alexandria.
“It was great to hear firsthand from cooperative members about what they do and how they rely on reliable electricity,” Landkamer said. “The USDA strives to make a difference in rural Minnesota by enhancing the reliability of the electrical grid. We are glad to be part of the investments made here at Runestone.”
