WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – New reports from the USDA show that food insecurity increased in Texas over the past year.

Texas has a food insecurity rate of 16.9%, the second-highest in the country.

That rate is 4.5% higher than the U.S. average and represents a 1.4% increase from last year’s food insecurity rate.

This indicates that more than 5 million Texans are at risk of hunger.

Meals on Wheels of Wichita Falls, a local nonprofit, is combatting this issue by providing free meals to individuals aged 60 and above.

Additionally, there are other resources and personnel available to provide further assistance.

“Social workers will go out once a month to the food pantries and they can do assessments out there. The assessments would be what you would need to get on. As quickly as from one day to the next day you start getting your meals delivered to you,” Director of Marketing and Development of Meals on Wheels Wichita Falls Kristen Byas said.

Byas said if anyone would like to assist in fighting against hunger, they can come volunteer.

There is also a corporate partnership initiative going on right now, which Byas said is a big ask but for a good cause.
