Report shows issues with housing facilities for animals, animal food storage and sanitation
The United States Department of Agriculture has released their inspection report of the Jackson Zoo. The report, which was published on April 3, addresses issues within housing facilities, food storage facilities, sanitation, separation, and primary enclosures.According to the report, the zoo, which is operated by the city of Jackson’s Department of Parks and Recreation, said that “some of the primate night house enclosures have surfaces that cannot be effectively cleaned.”The report also claims that some animal food is not being stored properly. The sanitation report claims there is evidence of widespread rodent activity in the shelter structures of numerous species including zebras. The USDA said rodents can contaminate animal food and bedding and can spread herms that may be harmful to animals.The USDA has asked the city to correct the issues by specific dates.This is not the first time the zoo has been cited by the USDA. In February 2023, the USDA cited the zoo because it didn’t have enough employees, which the USDA said could lead to employees being overworked, affecting the animals or public safety.The Jackson Zoo is currently hiring for several positions, including zookeeper.
